The novel was the basis for the 1932 film directed by James Whale with Boris Karloff, Melvyn Douglas, Charles Laughton, Raymond Massey and others. Five travelers seek refuge during a storm in "an eerie old mansion where they must spend the night with the weirdest household imaginable ... playing for laughs as well as chills, [Whale creates] ... a genuine masterpiece of black humor ...
