Item #23960 CHINESE GHOULS AND GOBLINS. Willoughby-Meade.

CHINESE GHOULS AND GOBLINS.

New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company Publishers, [1928]. Octavo, pp. [i-vi] vii-x [xi-xii] xiii [xiv] xv [xvi] 1-431 [432], original black cloth, front stamped in blind, spine in gold. First edition, U. S. issue with cancel title leaf. As the author states in his preface, "This book is an attempt to interest the general reader in some of the folk-tales, -- particularly those of the 'uncanny' type, -- in which China is so rich ..." The book consists mostly of excerpts and retellings of such tales, making it more of an anthology than a commentary. The chapters focus on various literary motifs, including one on vampires. Interesting material not available elsewhere. The author's sister, Gertrude Dunn, wrote the weird thriller UNHOLY DEPTHS. Foxing to page edges, mild foxing to preliminaries, a nearly fine copy in a very good dust jacket with foxing to front and spine panels, two small chips and a closed tear to the head of the spine panel. (23960). Item #23960
