Item #26892 THE MIGHTIEST MACHINE. John W. Campbell Jr.

THE MIGHTIEST MACHINE.

Providence, R.I. Hadley Publishing Company, [1947]. Octavo, original blue pebbled cloth (no priority), spine stamped in gold. First edition. The author's first SF book. Early science fiction novel of with a galactic sweep, first published in Astounding Science Fiction in 1934. "Intrepid space-farers are plunged into an alternative universe, where they discover ancient Earth-peoples and become embroiled in interplanetary war. Extravagant entertainment in the same rather juvenile vein as E. E. 'Doc' Smith's space epics of the period -- though it displays a better grasp of science and engineering. Campbell's first novel in book form, and perhaps the best of his early space operas." - Pringle, The Ultimate Guide to Science Fiction, second edition (1995), p. 237. This space epic remains "not only historically instructive and important, but fascinating to read as well." - Survey of Science Fiction Literature III, pp. 1396-1400. Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 3-7. Bookplate affixed to front paste down, original jacket flaps affixed to front free end paper, rubbing to cloth edges, spine leaned, a very good copy married to a nearly fine later state dust jacket by F.F.F. Publishers which is damp stained at the rear flap and lower left rear corner. The size of the jacket is slighter larger higher than the book so this jacket is likely untrimmed. This state of the jacket is uncommon. (Note: Julius Unger of F.F.F. acquired the back stock of Hadley publishers, on this title he ended up with books but no jackets so he produced a new variant). (26892). Item #26892
