Brian Stableford calls the stories "grotesque and gaudy, almost hallucinatory in their nightmarishness. They are heavily stylized and insistently morbid, but all the more vivid for their insistent morbidity." The stories were influenced by the turn of the century "[English] Decadent style;" several of the tales show the influence of Poe. New foreword by Brian Stableford and an afterword by Richard Dalby.
