FEERSUM ENDJINN.
[London]: Orbit, [1994]. Octavo, boards. First edition. Winner of the British Science Fiction Association Award, Novel, 1995. "...is a complex tale told at a scherzo pace, conflating several plotlines – one a bravura narration in dyslexic English – into a neatly planned climax during which the purpose of a terrestrial Macrostructure is revealed, a Far Future world is saved, folk are reunited, the dead walk as do the Uploaded, and every living being is sling-shot into a new paradigm at the end of things." - John Clute and David Langford, SFE (online). A MODERN MIRACLE.
London, New York and Melbourne: Ward, Lock & Co., Limited, 1902. Octavo, pp. [i-v] vi [7] 8-318 [319-320: ads], two inserted plates with illustrations by Henry Austin, original decorated burgundy cloth, front panel stamped in white, gold and blind, spine panel stamped in white and gold, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. First edition. A significant, and oddly overlooked, work of early science fiction, focused on the creation of a bionic superman. Experiments with dogs and suggestions of television and video recording surround the main story element. This precedes the work usually cited as the earliest important treatment of the superman theme in English, namely Beresford's THE HAMPDENSHIRE WONDER (1911). A MODERN MIRACLE is a fully developed Edwardian novel from a major commercial publisher in addition to being a scientific romance (at a time when there was perhaps a tenth as much science fiction as supernatural fiction -- which was a tenth of mystery fiction, which was a tenth of general fiction). Bodkin (1850-1933), Irish lawyer, Nationalist MP for North Roscommon, judge and author, wrote a number of detective stories, many featuring Paul Beck and Dora Myrl, who marry in THE CAPTURE OF PAUL BECK (1909), thus becoming the first fictional detective family.
