Interlocking sequence of macabre mysteries, involving vampirism, metempsychosis and cursed gems, in addition to the usual murder and mayhem. Clearly influenced by Robert Louis Stevenson's NEW ARABIAN NIGHTS (1882), with most supernatural elements being rationalized at denouement. Episodic, but cleverly constructed, with good weird atmosphere. [Reference: Bleiler (1978), p. 197. Reginald 14374].
