Golding's story was adapted later as a play and published as THE BRASS BUTTERFLY (1958). According the Berger (Science Fiction and the New Dark Age, pp. 196-8), Wyndham's "haunting" novella in which "the preventable is not prevented," is "the quintessence of dystopian fiction."
