First English translation of the Fantomas novel first published in France as Un Roi Prisonnier de Fantomas (1911). Fantomas is a character from French pulp literature who appeared in 32 volumes written by Souvestre and Allain, followed by another eleven volumes by Allain after the death of Souvestre. Fantomas is an arch-criminal who plots elaborate and horrible crimes; he is pursued by a policeman named Juve. At the time of publication they were immensely popular in France. A very good plus copy, foxing to cut edges, mild foxing to end papers, slight spine lean, very mild rubbing to corners and spine ends in a good dust jacket, large chips to spine ends which also affect the front and rear panels at the corners, loss along top front edge, loss along corners of rear panel, front panel is largely complete.
