One of Rand, McNally's many variant issues of this book; priority not determined. Collects seven stories, several published earlier in the anonymously edited anthology DREAMLAND AND GHOSTLAND (1887) and all published earlier in THE CAPTAIN OF THE POLESTAR AND OTHER TALES (1890). This was most widely available collection of Doyle's early fiction for American readers. Rand, McNally printed this collection, 1894-1899, in a number of different series and formats, the first a 25-cent paperbound edition as number 188 of their "Globe Library" series. This printing has "ALPHA LIBRARY" printed at the head of the title page. This printing follows the paperbound edition but this binding not listed Green and Gibson, pp. 608-608, which lists a green cloth binding for "ALPHA LIBRARY."
