First edition. The later U.S. edition was titled THE OLD DARK HOUSE. The novel was the basis for the 1932 film directed by James Whale with Boris Karloff, Melvyn Douglas, Charles Laughton, Raymond Massey and others. Five travelers seek refuge during a storm in "an eerie old mansion where they must spend the night with the weirdest household imaginable ... playing for laughs as well as chills, [Whale creates] ... a genuine masterpiece of black humor ...
