TWENTIETH-CENTURY SCIENCE-FICTION WRITERS.
New York: St. Martin's Press, [1981]. Large octavo, First edition. This first volume in this series which has gone through several editors (and publishers). All volumes are of interest as contents have changed from edition to edition. Concise bio-bibliographical and critical guide to 532 English-language writers of science fiction. Each entry provides biography, bibliographical checklist (including nonfiction), short critical essay, and, in some cases, the author's comments on his or her work. Two appendixes provide entries for thirty-five foreign-language science fiction writers and for five "major" fantasy writers. Fifty-one of the writers included here were deleted from the 1986 second edition. "...a number of historical figures were dropped from the revised edition to make room for newer authors, so both books should be retained by libraries and researchers." - Burgess, Reference Guide to Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror (2002) 58. [Reference: Anatomy of Wonder (1995) 7-30]. A fine copy in a nearly fine dust jacket with some patchy fade to spine and front panel. Note: Oversize heavy volume, extra postage likely. (30964).
