FIVE SCIENCE FICTION NOVELS.
New York: Gnome Press, Inc. Publishers, [1952]. Octavo, boardscloth backed boards. First edition. An important collection of short novels including "Destiny Times Three" by Fritz Leiber, "The Chronicler" by A. E. van Vogt, "The Crucible of Power" by Jack Williamson, and "But Without Horns" by Norvell W. Page. The final story is Norman L. Knight's "Crisis in Utopia" (July and August 1940 ASTOUNDING) which "depicts an ambiguously utopian Earth whose trillion people must face up to the potential disaster when an approaching meteor impacts upon the planet" (SFE online). The under-the-sea sequences and amphibious Tritons (genetically engineered humans) from this story and Knight's "Frontier of the Unknown" (July and August 1937 ASTOUNDING) are incorporated into A TORRENT OF FACES (1967), a novel Knight coauthored with James Blish. Spine ends a little soft, a fine copy in a nearly fine dust jacket with mild wear to spine ends with a bit of rubbing and moderate soiling to the rear panel. (35826). Item #35826
