Yonkers, NY: The Arlington Chemical Co., n.d. [but late, 1890s]. Small octavo, measuring approximately 5 X 7 inches, pp. [1-20] (unnumbered), profusely illustrated, lithographed in three colors, self wrappers, trimmed irregularly and printed in a format to suggest severe scorching, stapled. First edition. An advertising brochure for Liquid Peptonoids, a heath tonic. Purports to be a facsimile (translated into English) of a Martian newspaper carried from Mars to Earth by a returning company salesman. The booklet is unevenly trimmed to simulate scorching which occurred during an electrical storm in space. "Description of Martian life and numerous illustrations of artifacts on the planet, which is ruled by King Flammarion. Not noticeably influenced by Wells' 'The War of the Worlds,' which leads me to tentatively date this delightful advertising booklet a little before 1900." - Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy Volume II, p. 6. Promotional booklet for this famous, popular catastrophe novel, which was a huge commercial success (over half a million copies sold) and was made into a film that helped spark the SF movie boom of the 1950s. The front cover reproduces the four-color illustration printed on the front panel of the dust jacket of the published book.

The entire contents of this booklet, including the four-page "Dictionary of the Ape Language" were written by Burroughs. Included is a copy of a letter written to Henry Hardy Heins from Hulbert Burroughs explaining the booklet (reproduced in the Heins bibliography).
